West Ham - The way we were. - A little uplifting quiz
If, like me, you endured another miserable 90 minutes plus, sitting in the cold watching a clueless, boring West Ham, against Bournemouth Thursday, here is a little something to remind you that it was not always like this.

Over last 50 odd years, us old enough were entertained on a regular basis. Here are some games that, win or lose, us punters got our money’s worth!

How well do any of you remember them?
Starting with the earliest, what are the answers?

October 1968 – West Ham 8 Sunderland 0.
1) Which legendary goalkeeper and F.A Cup final hero had eight goals put past him?

March 1970 – Manchester City 1 West Ham 5
2) Which legendary player, having moved to West Ham a few days earlier scored 2 debut goals in the match?

January 1972 – Stoke 3 West Ham 2 (2nd replay League Cup)
3) Bobby Moore famously donned the keeper’s Jersey on a filthy, freezing but thrilling night. Who did Mooro replace between the sticks?

September 1974 – Burnley 3 West Ham 5
4)Starting the season with 6 losses and one draw, West Ham thumped Leicester City 6-2 and the next week travelled to Burnley for this thriller. Which young goalkeeper, who made his debut the previous season, made 2 world class saves late on to stop Burnley gaining a point?

April 1976 – West Ham 3 Eintracht Frankfurt 1 (European Cup Winner’s Cup S/F)
5) Trevor Brooking was truly World class on the mud bog pitch that night scoring 2 goals. Who scored West Ham’s other goal?

May 1977 – West Ham 4 Manchester Utd 2 -
6) A must win match to stay up, West Ham scraped through with two goals from ‘Pop’ Robson. Robson had two spells at West Ham but for which team did he have 3 different spells playing for?

September 1981 – Spurs 0 West Ham 4 -
7) Which player scored a hat-trick for us in our second game of the season?

October 1983 West Ham 10 Bury 0 (Milk Cup round)
8) A one-sided massacre. Tony Cottee scored a hat-trick of headers and 5 goals in that game. True or false?

April 1986 West Ham 8 Newcastle 1
9) Newcastle ended up having played 3 goalkeepers during the evening. One was an England outfield player. Who was he?
10) Which West ham player scored a hat-trick in this match?

May 1988 – West Ham 4 Chelsea 1

11)Which player scored a brace, made another and was then sent off?

November 1988 (Littlewood Cup) West Ham 4 Liverpool 1 -
12) Paul Ince scored a spectacular volley from a cross by which Irish International player?

November 1989 Blackburn 5 West Ham 4
13) Four goals down inside 30 minutes and 5-1 after 50 mins, West Ham scored three goals in the next 20 minutes to pull it back to 5-4 with four different scorers but not one of those was our new, well-known striker who played his first of just three games for us in that season before moving on. Who was he?

March 1993 West Ham 3 Wolves 1
14) Ten days after the death of Bobby Moore, West ham played this home game, which Player played in the No 6 shirt Number that day

Feb 1996 West Ham 4 Spurs 3
15) Played in atrocious conditions. Because of the conditions both sides played a lot of error strewn but very entertaining free flowing football. The earlier twin signings of strikers proved to be the turning point for this game and the rest of the season. Who were they and which clubs did they come from?

May 1998 West Ham 4 Leicester 3
16) Samassi Abou scored twice in this end of season see-saw fixture but which former West Ham Legend came on as a 2nd half sub for Leicester and scored two goals

February 2000 West Ham 5 Bradford City 4 - A nine goal thriller that had everything.
17) Which West Ham player staged an impromptu sit-down strike on the side line?
18) Which Two West Ham players scuffled with each over taking a penalty?

23) West Ham, 3-0 up at half time conceded four second half goals. Jermain Defoe scored the first goal but which much travelled striker, signed in the summer, from Leicester, via Benfica, Leeds and Sheffield United amongst others, scored the other two?

May 2006 Liverpool 3 West Ham 3 (Liverpool winning on penalties) F.A Cup Final
A pulsating final, one of the best and saw Liverpool come from behind twice and then win on penalties.
24) Teddy Sheringham scored one penalty but three were missed by the Hammers. Which were the three West Ham players that missed?
25) Who were the two managers on the day?
26) Who were the two captains on the day?

March 2007 West Ham 3 Spurs 4
27) Again, West Ham contrived to throw away a comfortable two goal lead. It was all going so well until Aaron Lennon was crudely bought down in our penalty area to revive a sagging Spurs. Who was the culprit?

August 2015 West Ham 3 Bournemouth 4
West Ham were two down at half time before picking up the pace after the break with two quick goals but to no avail. Bournemouth had more pace all over the pitch.
28) Which right back, transferred from Arsenal, was given a torrid time by Bournemouth’s Marc Pugh and Max Gradel before conceding a penalty and being sent off thus handing the game to Bournemouth?
